Stefano Pilati took a trip down memory lane for the Pre-Fall Yves Saint Laurent collection. The trip was as far back as 1977, when Yves himself showed his famed Opium collection. Pilati has been taking his time, trawling the archives, and dragging the brands history into the modern day. So far, so good. Spring was a study in all the greats, a combination of colour, ruffles and overall goodness. Now with Pre-Fall Pilati has honed in on this one particular collection, the Autumn 1977 Couture show, named after the perfume that was released in the same year. The original show was overly decadent, costing the House at least half a million dollars to produce.
It was quite a task to transform this opulence into a small 42 look Pre-Fall collection, especially to make it wearable for the everyday woman. The first step was to adapt a print from the original, and to re-work this into dresses and frothy blouses. Second step was to subtly introduce the sense of The Orient, without going crazy as demonstrated in Opium. Embossed leather, quilting and samurai shoulders did the trick, without being overpowering.
The colours are magnificent, with emerald, jade and fuchsia resplendent in box pleated skirts, cropped pants and cape like coats. This look is perfect for winter, bringing some brightness into your day, after so long swimming in a sea of black. These bright hues are sure to be a hit with major editors, such as Anna Dello Russo (of course!), not afraid to be the centre of attention.
If this is the shape of things to come, bring it on.
