Just because the stores are screaming ‘summer’ and ‘Christmas’ doesn’t necessarily mean we’re all currently in the throws of bikini beach days and eating our weight in mangoes and seafood. The current temperatures are hardly worthy of bare legs let alone micro minis. One label all too aware of the perils of dressing for Australia’s weather is Trimapee, which is why their latest trans-seasonal collection will be a much welcomed addition to any wardrobe.
The Melbourne label’s latest collection looks towards the light and a higher being for inspiration. This spiritual awakening saw designers Peter Strateas and Mario-Luca Carlucci digress from their signature monochromatic edge and enjoy a summer dalliance with lighter layers and warmer tones. Building upon the label’s ongoing evolution of drape, proportion and texture, Trimapee’s new collection ‘Comatose’ is an exercise in soft masculine tailoring and billowing layers.
The collection’s softer side can be seen in its exaggerated asymmetrical hem lines, loosely tied fastenings and sheer pieces in natural tones. This distinct nod to fragility is a refreshing shift for the dark-centric label. And it is a shift more than a total transformation. While the bright rusty red hue and explosive molecular print give the range an unexpected jolt, an underlying edginess still simmers and brews in the collection’s black smokey layers and crumpled cover ups, anchoring the range back to its Melbourne roots.
Away from colours and shapes, Comatose at its core revolves around fabrication, featuring pieces in silk voile, merino rib and soft leather. Pleated pantaloons, sheer button-down shirts with tales and long and lean silhouettes are some notable highlights of the range. Those educated in the fine art of layering will eat up Trimapee’s transeasonal collection with reckless abandone. There’s also very little need for an iron too, which is never a bad thing.
