THURSDAY SUNDAY INTERVIEW

Thursday Sunday is a Melbourne based label which was launched in the Summer of 2009 by Iris Cuaresma and Mara Tonetti. They share a passion for wanting to create a fresh take on fashion, which is both nostalgic and modern at the same time. All garments are made in Australia using natural fibres, and many are hand made by the duos mentor Gabriella Tonetti. Their pieces have already caught the attention of the Australian media, and will be stocked in Incu stores for Spring Summer 2011. They are dedicated to the ideals their business is based on and will continue to strive to change the face of fashion and production in Australia.

When did you decide to build a company based on eco values?

Incorporating stong sustainability and social values into our business has come about almost unconsciously and organically. Our passion for using only for natural fibres came about because they wear better, feel best on the skin and are great to work with. Our process of sourcing materials locally where possible, came about because Australia and New Zealand. offers so many natural fabrics of a high quality. Our belief in timeless, classic fashion (not throw-away fast-fashion) goes hand in hand with our commitment to quality craftsmanship and our understated, minimalist and relaxed aesthetics.

Why do you think it’s important for design businesses to start re-evaluating their manufacturing processes?

We like to think design of all sorts, not just fashion, is about functionality and longevity. This ethos should apply design to production processes also. We believe that there is a lot of waste and in the fashion industry, and by putting in place smart systems, you inevitably create a process beneficial for the environment as well as your business.

What is the Thursday/Sunday mission statement?

Thursday Sunday is about always using natural fibres, sourcing locally, classic design, quality Australian craftsmanship and an ever conscious dedication to sustainability and social good. We don’t believe in the over-consumption, fast-fashion world, we believe in creating beautiful clothes that will transcend season after season.

Can you give us an insight into some of your great products?

Apart from your classic relaxed aesthetic, our signature is our incredible Hand Knits. There are 100% hand made by dressmaker and mentor – Gabriella Tonetti. Constructed from bamboo for SS11/12, they drape so nicely on the body and feel amazing. As it is a natural fabric, bamboo is breathable which makes it perfect for summer! We also always include a hand made aspect to each collection, as it’s nice to still produce garments using traditional techniques.

Plans for the future of Thursday/Sunday?

We are very excited for the future. This Spring Summer Thursday Sunday will proudly hang on the racks of Incu and online at MyChameleon as well as on our own e-store.
