Tame Impala: Young and Free

After he “completely forgot slash didn’t know” he had a series of interviews with press today, Kevin Parker (the guitarist, vocalist and songwriter/producer for Perth band Tame Impala ) was remarkably concise and poignant, candidly discussing his approach to music and Tame Impala with openness and honesty.

When I get him on the phone, he’d been driving around Sydney trying to find the house he grew up in. The search proved fruitless, interrupted by mistaken routes and misleading roads and, of course, the aforementioned forgotten press interviews. The band has a show at The Civic in Sydney tonight that Parker has to prepare for, so he’ll “just have to turn around and go home…“, but this doesn’t seem to phase him; Much like Tame Impala’s 70s Height-Ashbury inspired organic sounding Antares, Mira, Sun, a wonderfully nuanced layering of hazy psychedelia, gospel-pop harmonies and folktronica, Parker strikes me as someone who just goes with the flow.

As for pre-show rituals, the band don’t really have any. Apart from performing bare-footed of course, something they’ve become quite infamous for. “I’ve done it for years, religiously, because I can’t bring myself to wear shoes” Kevin says. “I see feet as like hands, and you have to be connected to the stage… In fact, a couple of weeks ago I performed in shoes just to dispel the myth and i felt like i was going to fall over the whole time!”

Kevin continued to say American pop-folk artist Michael Franti is famous for having lived without shoes for eight years and counting… I suggested that I didn’t think it was such a good idea he try and break that record…
