RODARTE ON THE SILVER SCREEN

Black Swan

The Mulleavy sisters of Rodarte have made no secret of their love for film, with previous collections drawing inspiration from horror films and quirky Japanese cinema. Their creations evoke a world of fantasy and drama, so it makes perfect sense that Rodarte has been commissioned to design the costumes for Darren Aronsofsky’s upcoming film, “Black Swan”. Starring Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis as rival ballerinas in a New York production of Swan Lake, alongside Winona Ryder as a former prima ballerina, the first pictures released have sent quivers of anticipation for the film’s September release.

In the psychological thriller, the girls designed 40 outfits for the entire ballet corps, in their signature dark, ethereal style. While this is Rodarte’s first foray into costume, it seems only a natural progression that their twisted, theatrical and emotive shows and obsession with tulle translate to this film. And who better to dance in their couture into motion than their most loyal client, Natalie Portman?

This year has been stellar for the fashion film, with Tom Ford’s aesthetic dream that was “A Single Man”, Tilda Swinton’s Jil Sander wardrobe in “I Am Love”, and of course “Sex And The City”…but “Black Swan” looks like it may promise to trump them all and cause a complete visual melt down! Come September, we’ll all be clamoring for tutus!
