Fans rolled in early on a balmy Friday night at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre, keen to catch a glimpse of Melbourne indie rock group, Alpine. Capturing the growing audience with their perfectly pitched vocals, unique dance moves and glittering faces, front woman Lou James and Phoebe Baker certainly demanded the attention they deserve. Favourites such as ‘Villages’ and ‘Heartlove’ were backed by hefty beats and bass guitar, enabling vocals to be perfectly harmonised. A stellar first support act to set spirits high.
Hey Rosetta! Where have you been all our lives? Back in Australia for the third time, the Canadian six-piece made it no secret they were seeking the love of die-hard Jezabels fans and to prove it, their next stop down under will be a headline tour. Energetic and enthusiastic, this band proves that entertainment, roaring vocals, keyboard solos and the beautiful sounds of cello and violin thrown into the mix makes for unreal live music. Lead Singer Tim Baker’s execution of ‘Yer Fall’, a hit from their third album ‘Seeds’, was flawless.
It’s been a Long Highway travelled for Sydney indie pop-rock group The Jezabels, and if their first Sydney show promoting their debut album ‘Prisoner’ is any indication of their future success, this intriguing quartet have only given their fans a taste of what the future holds for their music. As the long intro of ‘Prisoner’ began, silhouettes lurked behind a sheer curtain, ready to burst into the roaring crowd and blow the minds of excited fans.
Front woman Hayley Mary has a style of her own on stage, only engaging with the audience a handful of times; this is one singer who knows that belting out tunes powerful enough to cave walls or break glass leaves insignificant chit chat for dead. Gracing the stage in her signature all black attire, Mary makes us wonder where the lung capacity to hit perfect pitch comes from. Familiar tracks ‘Hurt Me’ and ‘Easy to Love’ off their earlier EPs, had the whole room on its feet, singing in sync with her every word and replicating rhythmic dance moves. It quickly became clear how this gig sold out; The Jezabels owned every minute of their hometown show.
Chilling echoes of electric guitar introduced ‘A Little Piece,’ a single from their third EP ‘Dark Storm’ released just last year, sent chills down spines across the room. Getting into the spirit, guitarist Samuel Lockwood gave it everything he had, and incorporating expertise on keys and back-up vocals, Heather Shannon proves that her talent is second to none.
Now deep into their set, the louder Nik Kaloper drummed, the more intense the love in the room became, Mary’s energy was captivating as she perched herself high up on the front of the stage, roaring her heart out, delivering perfect vocal range and moody lyrics. ‘Disco Biscuit Love’ ended the set with an all-time high, leaving fans with melting hearts, Cheshire grins from ear to ear and catchy tunes that are guaranteed to circulate in minds for days to come.
