In this age of Twitter, Facebook, blogs and other new-fangled gadgets and technical wizardry, the biggest enemy of musicians and PR companies looking to keep a secret are… the musicians themselves.
How many times have we seen a musician leak news of their own tour, album or other surprise? Answer: heaps of times. The latest to add their name to the list if Flea, legendary bassist of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who casually dropped news that the Californian funk-rockers will be heading Down Under in 2013.
In an ‘ask me anything’ forum on Twitter, Flea told an Aussie fan “yes, we are coming to australia early next year.” Of course, this leads to the inevitable speculation of “which festival are they on?” Big Day Out and Soundwave are the obvious frontrunners, but BDO seems probably more likely than Soundwave; the Chilis have some history with the January festival, having headlined in 2000, and they’re also headlining Big Day Out’s new sister festival, Lollapalooza, this year.
In other Peppers news, Flea also revealed that the band have been writing while on their mammoth world tour, and will soon begin a run of vinyl releases.
“We are going to put out 18 new songs over the next 6 months on 7 inch and [digital],” Flea told a fan who enquired about new material.
