According to a recent study by scientists at Manchester University, it’s more important to have a perfect pout then transfixing eyes. Who’d of thunk it? During their trials, they measured the amount of time men spent looking at eyes and lips upon first meeting a woman, and the result was that most guys spend more than half their time looking at a lady’s lips. They also found that regardless of whether you’ve got a big or little mouth, thin or full lips, men are always more interested in lips with lippy on them. According to Dr. Geoff Beattie, “Our research suggests that red lips and perceived attractiveness are still inextricably linked, with red lipstick the most powerful attractor, and one that significantly increases visual fixation.”

With all this in mind, we asked our resident Beauty Editor, Nicola Burford, to tell us her all time favourite shades of red lippy.

“I love a red lip and I’m a believer that there is a shade of red for everyone! I think everyone should have at least one shade of red in their makeup bag — with a matching lip liner, of course.

My top favourites, as they all suit most people, are (in no particular order):

MAC Lipstick in Russian Red – a classic, matte fire engine red. Made famous and worn fabulous by Madonna.
Illamasqua Lipstick in Salicious – a darker plum red to bring out the inner succubus!
YSL Rouge Pur Couture #13 – gorgeous rich, bright tomato red perfect for summer trends
MAC Lipstick in Viva Glam 1 – a brick red suitable for those who want strength but not brightness. Also good for the soul as 100% retail price goes to the MAC AIDS Fund.
