In the latest issue of Groupie, we look closely at the issue of authenticity in music, inspired by a lady, born ‘Elizabeth Grant’, who has been accused of sporting faux talent, facial features, and indie chic cool. It didn’t help when she openly admitted to in fact changing her name after her lawyers and label thought she should, some attributing this to her wanting to put an unsuccessful musical history behind her.
“She wiped [out] this other person. I think she actually thinks that she’s that other person, and she probably is,” one critic told Billboard.
Poor Lizzie; all she wanted was a stage name, like Lady Gaga or Cher. And so came the task of her settling on a suitable pseudonym for herself, one that better captured her luscious, dramatic style. So why ‘Lana Del Rey’, then?
“I wanted something that suited my style and music,” she tells Groupie. “And I thought it sounded beautiful rolling off the tongue. I wasn’t changing personas or anything like that. I’m still just Lizzie; I think people forget that.”
