INTRODUCING KARMATIQUE

There have been a lot of interesting new labels popping up in recent times, many of which we have been introducing you to. One of our favourites is Karmatique, a Sydney based label who has a very unique and interesting point of view. The design duo of Kimberly Quintal and Anita Tamati joined forces in 2010 over their common love of vintage clothing, prints and bygone eras. The 1960s and 70s is a particular interest point for the two who have now launched their eco-chic women’s wear collection. They design with the future in mind and utilise natural fibres and recycled fabrics and trimmings. Karmatique aims to minimise waste by using all their off cuts to create the most beautiful lingerie pieces. The debut collection ‘With Love, Pop and Fly’ features an array of silk, bamboo, wild nettle, organisc muslin and hemp silk in a colour palette of muted pastels, earthy tones and the obligatory vintage floral linen. The shapes are romantic and feminine. Just the kind of clothes girls want to wear. We had a chat with Kimberly and Anita to hear their take on the collection.

What did you study and what kind of previous experience did you have?
Kimberly: I studied Fashion Design at East Sydney Fashion Design Studio and then worked in a number of roles in different areas of fashion, learning some invaluable lessons from various angles about running a fashion business along the way.

Anita: I worked three years for a fashion and bridal designer in New Zealand, starting with the company when it was first launching. With the combination of being mentored by an amazing designer and courses to extend my skills, I learned all areas of the business running the sales and production side of the business for two years in both the bridal and fashion line.

When did you decide to do your own thing?
We decided to join forces whilst on a trip to Bali, with a common love for sustainability and vintage sourcing, we knew we had found our match!

What is the biggest inspiration for your designs?
Our inspiration for this collection is the late 60s and early 70s, fusing the old with the new in a light hearted, fun and feminine manner. In general we are inspired by sourcing interesting vintage objects, lingerie and sleepwear, fabrics, lace, trimmings and buttons locally and in our travels.

How would you describe your personal aesthetic?
We actually have a similar personal aesthetic – and that’s probably why our collaboration works so well. An eclectic feminine fusion of vintage and new, which undoubtedly influences our designs.

Any exciting plans for the future?
Our vision ahead is to work on projects in the community and abroad. To inspire people…. To think eco and to live eco…
