As he chats to me on a rare night at home, Miles Kane oozes confidence and cheeky swagger. Unashamedly enthusiastic for every aspect of his career predicament – “I love doing the photos and the interviews and the gigs… I love it all!” – he’s evidently having the time of his life.
Only six months ago, most people probably best knew Kane as co-frontman of The Last Shadow Puppets, alongside the decidedly more renowned Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys fame. But since the release of his debut album Colour Of The Trap in mid 2011, Kane has steadily been making a name for himself, winning over fans at home in the UK and now abroad. “When we started, Radio 1 was a bit ‘Oh, don’t know if we’ll play it’,” he reflects. “But two singles in we’re on the A-list and they won’t stop playing it.”
Colour Of The Trap is the musical embodiment of all that swagger, comprising a collection of tracks that barrel along over grooves that defy you to keep your feet still, even in their quieter moments. Vintage influences like Duane Eddy and Link Wray are fused with Motown drums, Tarantino movie soundtracks, and the sultry delivery of Serge Gainsbourg to create a seductive mix of retro rock’n’roll. Underpinning the album lies a basic principle of simplicity: “Each song – whether it’s a fast or a slow song – I didn’t want it to chop and change and be fast and slow [with] loads of little bits, I just wanted it to groove in a natural easy way.”
