When we interviewed Givers back in July, around the time their debut album ‘In Light’ was released, front man Taylor Guarisco couldn’t believe their luck.
“It’s pretty much nuts that I’m on the phone talking to you right now… it’s bizarre how all this has worked out.”
Now nearly six months on, the Lafayette Louisiana band have announced they will be here for Laneway Festival next year, plus a handful of headline shows, splitting the bill with Portugal. The Man.
“Things are slowly happening,” says Guarisco, after a self-confessed late night out with his fellow band mates, watching a friend perform for the first time in their hometown.
“Since the album’s been released, it’s been like this slow, steady opening of doors. I can’t say it’s been a massive door or an explosion or anything like that, but it’s slowly getting into the ears of everyone.”
Locally, ‘In Light’ has been enjoying ample airplay, produced by Ben Allen (Cee-Lo Green and Animal Collective) and Chris Coady (Grizzly Bear, Beach House). Their track ‘Up Up Up’ made it onto Groupie’s own summer road trip playlist, and is being hotly tipped for a place in triple j’s Hottest 100 countdown. One thing’s for certain though; you won’t catch these guys getting complacent in a hurry.
“We have such a strong sense of humanity,” reveals Guarisco, “we also have this very strong connection with the bigger picture, so we always have to just step back from it all.”
Givers will be here with Portugal. The Man in February, playing songs from their debut album in three east coast headline shows.
“You know to be totally honest, I wasn’t really aware of what they do until we opened up for them in New York,” he confesses of their co-headliners. “But we saw their set there… it was great! They have this amazing sound – a really huge sound, and huge production, and a huge crowd… it’s going to be really good playing with them.”
The February tour will mark Givers’ maiden voyage Down Under, despite Guarisco having played Bluesfest one time with a former band.
“It was too short and very sweet,” he says. “Growing up in America, your overall view of Australia is that it’s one of the most beautiful, exotic places to visit – when you can afford it one day! Like: ‘oh Australia, what a land!’ My mind has this connotation of it being this place of real natural beauty.”
After they wrap things up here, the band are looking forward to cooking up a new record next year.
“We all have ideas that are all just in that marinating stage. We haven’t had more than two weeks off in the last two years, so we’re really excited to be home, writing down some ideas and listening to old recordings again.”
