GOTYE SCORES BIGGEST SINGLE ON USA 2012 CHARTS

The accolades keep pouring in for “our Wally,” old mate Gotye. With Neilsen Soundscan releasing their mid-year music sales data, he officially has the biggest digital single and the third biggest digital album of 2012 in the USA.

Billboard reports that his Kimbra collab ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ has been sold an astonishing 5.5 million online copies. That’s of course not including physical sales, and illegal downloads; just legit, online sales. Five and a half million.

It’s another history-making moment for Gotye, with Billboard reporting that no other song has ever sold 5 million copies in the first half of a year. It is apparently also “the 15th best-selling digital song of all time.”

His album ‘Making Mirrors’ also hasn’t done too badly, making it to number 11 on the mid-year album charts (538,000 sales). The Adele juggernaut keeps rolling, with her album ’21′ selling a ridiculous 3,368,000 copies in the first half of 2012 alone. To put it in perspective, the #2 album (Lionel Richie with ‘Tuskegee’) has sold just 912,000. Even One Direction fever couldn’t unseat the Brit, with the boy band coming third so far with 899,000

Mad props to Gotye! Not only is he not dead, but he’s still killing it overseas and flying the flag for Aussie talent. He’ll return (no doubt to a heroes welcome) for a national tour later this year.
