David Guetta is one of the most controversial figures in dance music, and the poor Frenchman can’t seem to catch a break these days. While some praise his ability to consistently create club bangers, others see his production as a representation of watered-down, formula-following commercial drivel. Similarly, while he received the huge accolade of being voted the #1 DJ in the world in DJ Mag’s 2011 poll, the results were met with a fierce and frosty reception from many dance music fans.
Now another piece of scathing critique has been fired at Guetta, this time from the unlikely source of Foals frontman Tannis Philippakis. Speaking on Guetta, he said “David Guetta is basically… it’s not even something that really makes my blood boil because it is just bullshit. It is an abomination but there needs to be bad music around. You need Jilly Cooper novels and pulp, trashy culture.”
“Plus, some people like shit music. I don’t like David Guetta and I don’t like that style. What bothers me more really is that a lot of hip-hop is being played over those backing tracks, and I find that a shame because I like hip-hop a lot,” he continued.
No doubt that these comments are going to earn plenty of praise from Foals’ legions of mainstream-hating, rolled-up chino-wearing fans. Don’t expect to see Philippakis and co. fistpumping to ‘Sexy Bitch’ anytime soon.
