Duckpond aka the pyjama wearing guy behind the etherial Lilyworld at Big Day Out festival will be launching an exhibition of his art at Mart Gallery from this Friday May 20 until June 4.
Duckpond was first commissioned to design the lights for the first Big Day Out festival in January 1992, and was given the title of ‘Ambience Director’ to “give punters the impression there was acid in the beer.” The legendary ‘Lilypad’ was then created at the festival described as “an oasis of stupidity in a sea of black t-shirts.” His artistic characterisations now come to life in an exhibition, as well as launching a line of bespoke pyjamas, as described by the man himself:
“The bunnies and other characters in my work are sub and semi conscious reflections of ourselves as we go about our lives in the twenty first century. Rolling eyes and maloc’cluded dentistry portray the need for asymmetry in our lives and balloons our escape from vertical challenges. Boomerangs flying through the air are symbols of good luck, that we will come back to. Analogue and retro are hip again. The future is low voltage. Take the bunnies and run. “
“The twelve-volt solar system is sustainable, rechargeable and comes with a 3-month warrentee… embrace music and performance in your life, give yourself freely to expressions of love and silliness and you will be forever young.”
Duckpond’s exhibition will run at Mart Gallery from Friday 20th May – Saturday June 4th.
