It’s with uttermost sadness that we have learned of the tragic death of Australia’s favourite DJ, Ajax. It is reported he died in a car accident in Melbourne. More details to come as we learn of them. Adrian Thomas has had a long and illustrious career since taking over the decks in the early 2000s. After abandoning a career in the arts, Ajax took up music and formed the epic cult ‘Bang Gang’ with friends Dan and Beni Single, hotelier Jaime Wirth, Angus Gruzman and ksubi art director Mikey Nolan.

This DJ gang made it to the top, and fast, providing the soundtrack for many people’s formative years, including ours. There wasn’t a Friday night that would pass, without the weekly pilgrimage to either Moulin Rouge, or later, Club 77, to dance and sweat the night away to the best music the noughties had to offer. After the boys recorded Ministry of Sound Mashed 2, the cult following grew to new heights. Ajax was an incredible stand alone DJ, but it was when he was mashing with his friends that you could really see how much he loved his work.

After Bang Gang dissipated, Adrian went on to set up Sweat It Out, his own record label, in 2008. With artists like Gameboy Gamegirl, Edu K, Act Yo Age, Yolanda Be Cool, Oh Snap and D CUP on the roster, Ajax was back in the game and taking his career to another level. Whilst many were nostalgic for the past, it was exciting to see new developments happening in his world.

This is going to be shocking news to all, and we can’t express how sad we are to learn of this loss of Ajax as a DJ, and Adrian as a loving friend to many. Our thoughts are with his friends and family at this time.

Head to Ajax’s soundcloud and take some time to reminisce on the good times this sad Friday morning.
