So why Vanessa Paradis?
Not only has she one of the most recognisable pouts in the industry (‘Twas she that made that gap a statement long before Jess and Lara)
“ Vanessa’s personality and background as a singer and actress make her a Chanel woman, because she is modern, active, independent and free. Rouge Coco Shine aims to transmit this precise idea of freedom, mischievousness and natural elegance: Vanessa Paradis perfectly personifies all of these things.” Says Chanel

In 1992, you became the face of COCO fragrance in an ad that left a lasting impression. How do you look back on it?
“It was an amazing experience. I was very young and had never worked in the fashion industry. I had never been so closely involved. I hadn’t been a part of that world at all and experienced it for the first time with CHANEL. Jean-Paul Goude directed it, and it was his idea to transform me into a bird and put me in a cage on a trapeze. So, it started with a week of training on a trapeze. It was great. There was then a week of shooting for a 30-second film directed by Jean-Paul Goude, who is as interesting to watch as he is to follow and listen to. It’s a bit like a fairy tale: a young girl in torn jeans undergoes a metamorphosis with makeup, a hairstyle and a manicure… But more importantly, it wasn’t just about beauty or trying to sell a dream. I had a role to play, and it was more fun to represent CHANEL hanging from a trapeze in a bird costume than playing a femme fatale that wasn’t at all me at the age of 18.”
CHANEL trusted you even though you were a very young artist. What influence has this brand had in your life?
“When good taste is readily available, you can take shortcuts. It prevents you from making big mistakes.”
In this mythical film, there were already several close-ups of your lips whistling, as if you were destined to one day become the face of a CHANEL lipstick…
“It’s not exactly a coincidence, but I don’t have the same perspective as that of a spectator. When a singer or actress is asked to represent a brand, it’s not just for her image but also her voice. It is ingrained on their minds. When you think of her voice, you think of her mouth. Whether you like it or not, I have a gap in my front teeth, which people often comment on, but when you see the gap, you know it’s me (smiles). Jean-Paul Goude shot a close-up of my mouth because I was whistling, because I was a bird and because it’s very feminine: the mouth is one of the most sensual parts of the face and body. At CHANEL, there is a lot of staying power. The women who have been lucky enough to represent CHANEL have often had a long history with the brand. I was the face of COCO, and CHANEL has not made another ad for COCO since that film. So, when they are preparing to launch a lipstick called COCO, they came to their last muse. They’re stuck with me! (smiles)”
What does the name COCO mean to you?
“After CHANEL, it’s the word that sounds the best. It’s impressive to say, to read and in line with the rest. I was associated with the name 17 years ago. People have already heard our names together, so it seems natural to associate me with this lipstick. People remember it.”
Do you have a favorite shade?
“There’s one for every day, every season, every mood. I’m still discovering the collection.”
Do you often change lipstick colours according to your mood or outfit?
“Both. Often according to my outfit, but a colour can play on a mood or an attitude. It reinforces an emotion.”
Do you collect lipstick?
“Do I collect lipstick? Yes! (smiles)”
What does the object, the lipstick case, inspire in you?
“Most of us girls, since we learned to walk, like lipstick. Little girls wear lipstick, young ladies, women, grandmothers. It’s a beautiful object either on a table or in a handbag and it’s pleasant to hold in your hand. Applying it is as interesting to do as it is to watch. There is a certain fascination about watching a woman put her makeup on. The same goes for eyes and mascara, but lipstick is universal. Everyone likes it, at any age.”
