LA GAITE LYRIQUE

Reopening in March this year, Paris’s La Gaite Lyrique, a nineteenth-century Haussmann-era theatre, has been reborn as a cutting edge modern cultural mecca. Nearly 150 years after its initial construction as an opera house, the complex undertook an 83 million Euro investment from the French government, transforming the space into a jaw dropping experimental haven for digital art, performance, music and film.

Overseen by architect... read more

KARL’S PARIS PAD

He may helm a fashion house that is redolent with the class of a bygone era, but Karl Lagerfeld’s taste in interior design looks firmly towards the future. The designer’s latest hobby, guest-editing publications that have nothing to do with him (Metro and Elle France have both benefitted from his illustrious gloved touch) has stretched to the May edition of France’s Architectural Digest.

The issue, as yet unreleased, will feature a peek into the Kaiser’s... read more

PANIC ROOM

French street artist Tilt has taken the internet by storm with a video featuring his installation, in a little known hotel room in Marseille called “Panic Room”. Covering half of the space, from the ceilings to the floor, in a blanket of technicolour graffiti, while leaving the other half untouched in glaring sterile white, the room both disorients and delights the viewer.

With both video and photo documentation showing the artistic process, the slow and partial takeover with the spray... read more

TESHIMA ART MUSEUM

The combined creative visions of artist Rei Naito and architect Ryne Nishizawa become the Teshima Art Museum, a curious and curvaceous encounter atop a hill on the island of Teshima, Japan. Overlooking the inland sea, the space is reminiscent of a water droplet, sitting proud among spacious grounds surrounded by traditional rice terraces, with no apparent entrance.

The unconventional building consists of a 25cm thick exposed concrete shell, devoid of pillars, spanning an area of 40 by... read more

GWENYTH PALTROW TO PLAY PICASSO’S LOVER

I have long been a fan of Picasso. Ever since studying his life in depth during high school art class, it has been a life long love. Of course I have seen the real deal on numerous occasions, but it was only upon walking the hallowed halls of the Musée national Picasso in Paris that you can truly grasp the enormity of his body of work. Recently a big chunk of the collection made its way to the Art Gallery of NSW, which I finally went to see last Saturday night. I booked in for Picasso after hours,... read more

MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA BEIJING

Cult Belgian fashion establishment Maison Martin Margiela showcase their newest and largest boutique in Beijing, China. Featuring a highly dramatic and fabulous stainless steel slide that snakes from top to bottom, spilling a showcase of homewards in the front window display, the Maison Martin Margiela aesthetic is edgy with a white on white industrial laboratory influence.

Housing their complete range including both women’s and men’s apparel, accessories and home collections, the... read more
