We wrote about the John Jameson Productions initiative a little while ago – a screenwriting competition encouraging young writers to come up with a three minute film concept for the chance to have it produced with a team of leading professionals in the film industry and a $20,000 budget. From all the entries, six finalists are chosen to have their ideas workshopped and developed before three are chosen to be brought to life.
This year’s six finalists have just been announced : Jim Lounsbury... read more
!Whether it’s necessary or not, the most evil of film villains is brought back to life this year with the remake of Nightmare On Elm St. While classics should generally remain untouched the trailer doesn’t look like they’ve hacked it up too bad! (the lack of a young Johnny Depp is a problem however). ... read more
One of the more successful brand collaborations of recent times is the John Jameson Productions competition, which has achieved a lot in its nurturing of up and coming film writers. The JJP competition invites entrants to submit a short synopsis for a three-minute film that has a twisted ending. From the entries – over 780 of which were submitted this year – six are shortlisted by a professional panel, and their writers are treated to an intensive workshop where they are further reviewed before... read more
The Runaways played music that was hard and fast. They lived hard and fast. And their meteoric rise to fame followed a trajectory that was hard and fast.
Sounds like a familiar, paint-by-numbers tale of rock stardom that could just as easily be applied to The Ramones as Spinal Tap. But the story of The Runaways and their brief but legendary career is set apart by a couple of key factors: namely, The Runaways were girls. Sixteen-year-old girls.
Members of The Runaways may have been... read more
Purely for its appeal on the surface – the ever fashionable protaganist, the historical and artistic interest, the French director and lead actress – this film has racked up a bunch of gushing reviews and earned the honour of closing the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. And yes, on the surface, it is fantastic. Anna Mouglalis makes for a beautiful and strong Coco Chanel and represents the independent and determined spirit of the designer exceptionally well. Mads Mikkelsen transcends the stiff, tortured... read more
Melbournians will be treated to the La Mirada Spanish Film Festival this weekend, a great excuse to not bother with the crowded holiday destinations and bad traffic. It looks like a rainy one too, all the better for heading down to the ACMI complex at Fed Square. The festival is co-programmed by legendary Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar (most recent films include ‘Volver’ and ‘Broken Embraces’) with input from co-curators Martin Scorcese and Stephen Daldry.

King of cinematic other-worlds, outsiders, gothic adventure and surreality, Tim Burton, has turned his hand to one of the world’s most well known and loved fairytales – Alice in Wonderland, and lucky for us, has painted it with the broad strokes of Burton’s brush of indelible brilliance.
Whether embedded in our childhood memories or celebrated in party and pop iconography, the film weaves a fantastical road through the world... read more
‘The Book Of Eli’ is the latest film from the Hughes brothers who previously directed Johnny Depp in ‘From Hell’ as well as ‘Dead Presidents’ and ‘Menace To Society’. This is a sci-fi film that sees Denzel Washington in unfamiliar territory for him, playing a tough survivor of a post-apocalyptic word. A few months ago, this was the film everyone in the US was watching if they’d already seen ‘Avatar’. For this reason we think it’s... read more
Jean-Pierre Jeunet has certainly become one of the world’s favourite directors thanks to his cooky and cute style made famous with the incredible ‘Amelie’. Somehow he blends that more than real feel of his films and almost slapstick style humour with a really personable touch which makes for such entertaining cinema.
