It’s all about the bleached blonde right now, isn’t it? Abbey Lee caused a rukus when she made the sudden transformation, then androgynous blondie Andrej Pejic took the world by storm, taking out a slew of international Vogue editorials. Most recently, model Britt Maren has bleached her locks to walk Balenciaga. Not to mention musicians like Mark Ronson and Nicki Minaj and their new lighter locks… It seems the world has gone bonkers for blonde, loco for light, wild for white — and we have too.
Following this inundation of blondies, we were inspired to share a few of our favourite fabulous blonde muses, from Roger Vadim’s blonde bombshells to Dakota Fanning and her blonde bangs in the The Runaways.
In Roger Vadim’s Metzengerstein — a short Edgar Allen Poe-inspired film from the Spirits of The Dead trilogy — the beautiful Jane Fonda plays an cruel medieval countess, Frederica. Her character always looks fabulous, even — nay, especially — when she’s tormenting her hapless guests and servants. She falls in love with her handsome cousin, but alas! Her evil ways lead to her undoing, and perhaps more regretfully, her weave’s undoing too.
While we’re talking about Roger Vadim’s foxy femme fatales, we’re utterly enamored with Brigette Bardot’s portrayal of the female Don Juan in the aptly titled 1973 film, Don Juan, or if Don Juan were a Woman. Bardot’s character — believing she is the reincarnation of the infamous Spanish libertine — confesses to her cousin (a priest, played by Robert Hossein) all of the indecent and immoral acts of her recent years, from framing a married man to murder. And, as you may have already guessed, her evil ways lead to a dramatic downfall.
This film is responsible for a number of infamous scenes, including Bardot’s lesbian liaison with Jane Birkin, and Don Juan washing her cousin’s hands in a way that suggests there’s more than cousinly love between them (there is). While searching for clips from the film, we were lucky enough to stumble across this fantastic clip from an interview with Bardot, in which she describes an incredible blonde moment: the first and only time that she met Marilyn Monroe.
The next blonde we’ve always had a soft spot for, is a true blonde, in every sense of the word. Hungarian socialite and actress, Eva Gabor played one of the most fabulous characters on television in the lates sixties, Lisa Douglas of Green Acres. Douglas was the antithesis of the domestic goddess. Her coffee was a brown sludge, and her hot chocolate was literally that, but she did try — even if it did seem that she filled her days wandering about the house in wonderful costumes, the most common of which was her green chiffon negligee. Gabor’s glamorous up-do and decadent costumes are largely the reason we’re so taken with this show, but it’s pretty funny too. Check out this clip from that time her countess mother came to town:
Dakota Fanning played one of our favourite recent blonde roles when she transformed herself into the sexy Cherie Currie for The Runaways. We loved her shaggy, feathered blonde do (which was inspired by David Bowie’s hair at the time), and her trashy new look. Apparently, Fanning was thrilled to learn that she could keep all of her costumes, including the lingerie.
