ARIA AWARD NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED

ARIA AWARD NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED

The nominations for this year’s ARIA Awards were announced late yesterday and the results are interesting. In sharp contrast to last year, with Jess Mauboy collecting the most nominations, this year the less commercial more “indie” acts are getting an industry nod.

Adelaide-born US based sweet-thing, SIA, picked up 6 nominations including Album of the Year, Single of the Year (Clap Your Hands), Pop Release, Independent Release, Best Female and Most Popular Australian Artist. This is a whopping figure considering last year she picked up her first ever ARIA for Best Music DVD. Madame of mischief, Megan Washington also clocked up nominations for Album of the Year, Single of the Year (How To Tame Lions), Female Artist, Breakthrough Artist, Adult Alternative Album and Most Popular Australian Artist.

The most noticeable thing about this year’s list is that more commercial acts like ex-idol stars Guys Sebastian and Stan Walker simple don’t feature in the coveted Album of the Year and Single of the Year category. Similarly, industry heavy-hitters like Powderfinger and John Butler Trio are completely absent from these important categories. The ARIA award nominations only serve to prove a developing trend in Australian music – there’s been a definite shift towards fresh, innovative and more creative music. In short, 2010 has rocked and the ARIA award nominations prove it!

The ARIA Awards will take place on November 7 at the Sydney Opera House and will be broadcast on MTV at 6:30pm and Network Ten at 8:30pm.
